Possum Proofing - Drop Dead Pest Control

Possum Removal and Proofing

Possums may look cute, but when they move into your roof they can cause damage, create mess, and disturb your sleep. As possums are a protected species in Australia, it is illegal to harm them, and a licence is required to capture and relocate them. Our service is designed to resolve possum problems humanely and effectively, while ensuring your property is properly proofed to prevent re-entry.

We typically use two methods of removal:

  1. Installing a one-way door – This allows the possum to leave your roof space at night to feed but prevents it from getting back inside. Once we are confident the possum has exited, the entry point is sealed to stop future access.

  2. Setting a possum cage for capture and release – This involves placing a cage near the entry point with a food source (usually apple). A captured possum is released safely back into the wild in accordance with licence requirements. It is important to note that cages only work effectively once entry points have been proofed. If gaps remain open, possums will usually ignore the cage and continue re-entering the roof directly.

The initial visit includes a full inspection to locate entry points, proofing work where possible, and either cage setup or one-way door installation. The service usually takes about an hour, although larger proofing jobs may require additional time or costs. In some cases, a roofing specialist may be needed to complete work in areas we cannot safely access.

Safety is always our priority — if roof access is unsafe due to rain, we will complete any internal work possible and reschedule external work. Once proofing is complete and possums are removed, the issue is resolved for those areas. However, possums are persistent and may attempt to find new entry points elsewhere on your property.

We provide a 12-month warranty on all proofing work completed during the service. This warranty covers only the areas proofed at the time, not any new access points possums may create later. Additional possums caught after the initial service will incur an extra charge per animal.

What are the main methods of possum removal?

 We use two methods:

  • One-way door installation, which allows the possum to leave but not re-enter. Once it’s gone, we seal the entry point.
  • Cage capture and release, which involves setting a baited trap near a sealed entry point and releasing the possum nearby in accordance with licensing laws.
If entry points remain open, possums rarely go into cages — they simply continue using their regular way into the roof. Proofing ensures the possum is directed to the cage or one-way door for removal.
Most jobs take about one hour, depending on the property and proofing required. Larger or more complex proofing may take longer and could involve additional costs. This service can take place over a number of visits – inspection and proofing, setting a cage or one way door and returning to remove.
If it’s too dangerous to access the external roof, we’ll complete internal work and reschedule roof proofing for another, safer day.
We provide a 12-month warranty on the specific areas we proof at the time of service. However, possums are persistent and may attempt to find new entry points elsewhere on the property.
No. Possums are a protected species and can become aggressive if disturbed. Only licensed professionals are permitted to capture and relocate them safely.
